Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer Mohbad, testified in a coroner’s court on Wednesday, stating that his son had informed him that his wife was having a romantic relationship with another artist signed to Marlian Records.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, passed away on September 12 and was laid to rest the following day. The coroner’s inquest into his death began on October 13 and is being held at the Ikorodu magistrates’ court in Lagos.
Joseph Aloba, during his testimony, mentioned that he and his son had lived together for 18 years. He admitted that he didn’t know the exact residence where his son was staying with Naira Marley.
He stated that his son left home when he reached the age of consent and started assisting Marley while pursuing his own music career. Joseph said he had seen his son three days before his death and had only seen a photo of his casket.
According to Joseph, Mohbad had assured him that he could resolve his issues with Marley. He also mentioned that the deceased’s property was in the custody of his mother-in-law, and Mohbad had often informed him about his possessions being controlled by his wife and her family.
Joseph claimed that his daughter-in-law had occasionally put sleeping pills in his son’s food and that she had been unfaithful to Mohbad. He also stated that he and his son had shared 18 years together, and his son had no history of a terminal illness, except for a visit to a chemist for a rash when he was 16.
Joseph expressed his lack of trust in his daughter-in-law and said that his son had made efforts to reconcile him with Mohbad‘s mother.
He also informed the court that after reconciling with his mother, the deceased had bought a car for him.
At the start of the proceedings, the coroner offered condolences to Joseph Aloba and assured him that justice would be served in the case. On October 4, a Yaba magistrate’s court had remanded Naira Marley, Primeboy, and Sam Larry in police custody in connection with Mohbad’s death.
